I do not know the first thing about web development, and now that conventions are all done with, I've got some time to finally learn. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to educate myself to a decent competence in web design? Books? Tutorial websites? A school I can take a class or two at?

Web design as in coding or web design as in making the pages actually look good?

Sadly, they might be connected in ways that are shielded from my personal experience...

...whoops. I mean Web Design as in making a page work good or web design as in making a site look good.

...I guess you mean look good though? Maybe?

Sorry, I didn't clarify. Making it work. I'd like to actually understand the code.

I personally learnt everything I needed from W3C schools, when I transferred Bunny from the older system to the new mySQL database, I used it extensively.

http://www.w3schools.com/

It's run by the standards people, so as far as I am aware, everything is standards-compliant. The reference parts of each language, and the examples in the various sections are pretty good as well.

I can't say that the examples at the *best* way of doing things, but they do give an idea of how the parts work and I've never had a problem with them.

I have files which I could throw in your direction if you wanted something that worked in a very simple manner that you could pick through if you didn't have anything already, I don't know how well annotated they are though, so it might be more of a hindrance than a help. I throw it out there anyway just in case. :)

I'd look into FIT's course schedule. They have a lot of weekend and short-session courses that are WAYYYYY cheaper than, say, SVA. I took a Quark class there about a hundred years ago and it was good.

I'm sure BMCC and the CUNYs have stuff too, but I can't vouch for those.

Raina beat me to it, was going to say the same thing....I took a weekend refresher courses in flash and dreamweaver last summer. Usually its 10-6 on sat and sun, they fly through everything, but give out good clear notes and I just went home and played around with everything.

Totally off topic, just saw the cover for the first Dr. Mcninja book, love it!! You guys heading to SPX, might wait and get it off you then if you are.

I'd like to recommend you lurk webmaster forums that focus on stuff like SEO and marketing, they don't make pretty pages but they focus on getting traffic and turning it into $$. While you might not go as far as "optimizing your news posts keyword density" or something like that at least being aware of some of this stuff might come in handy.

I mostly browse porn webmaster forums like netpond.com (Which has a healthy mainstream section with info on stuff like domains and SEO, worth a look in any case) but there are plenty of mainstream ones like http://forums.digitalpoint.com/

For design I second w3schools.

I initially learned HTML just by reading other websites' source code!
It's THAT easy to learn!
I did eventually take a one-semester class, though. Any books I could recommend would be horribly outdated at this point.

I also used to visit webmonkey.com a lot.

For reasons no one completely understands, follicles, often called pores, sometimes get blocked.
Sebum (oil) which normally drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria begins to grow. Both whiteheads and blackheads start out as a microcomedone.
